Wood vs Quartz Countertops: How to Choose

This Old House says wood countertops require some care and maintenance. George Buildings calls quartz non-porous and resistant to staining. Price both, plus a steel worktop, on the same layout, and check seams, finish and sink cut-outs before you order.

Which is better for a kitchen, wood or quartz countertops?

Wood or quartz countertops suit different kitchens, mainly according to how much care you will give the top. This Old House says wood countertops need some care and maintenance, especially compared with engineered materials such as laminate, quartz or Corian. HomeGuide adds that granite and quartz have better stain and heat resistance, although most wood costs less. George Buildings describes quartz as non-porous and resistant to staining.

What do wood countertops offer?

This Old House calls wood forgiving and gentle on dishes: there is no clatter when you set down a plate or glass, and dropped dishes are less likely to break. It adds that minor dings, stains or even gouges can be sanded out and refinished. Baird Brothers, a hardwood supplier, lists wood as able to be repaired, re-sanded and restained. Most wood countertops are butcher block, says This Old House, which can handle some light meal prep, though they are rarely used for chopping. It calls edge grain the most common type and less prone to cupping or warping, and says end grain is less stable and about 40% more expensive than edge grain. One commenter in a Houzz

thread says wood looks new for about two days before it develops a patina of nicks and stains.

Can quartz or porcelain look like wood?

A poster in a Houzz thread wanted the beauty of wood with the durability and easy care of quartz. In an archived Reddit thread, a homeowner replacing Corian countertops asked for the look of wood without the care of real wood or butcher block, and one commenter named Marazzi Vero, a porcelain tile line that the commenter says is also made for countertops. The commenter also gave a plank size and colour name for that tile line, which do not carry over to other products. George Buildings says porcelain tile countertops are rising in popularity, can compare with granite and quartz, and are durable and resistant to heat and scratches. Fadior’s surface options include a 3D wood-grain transfer that

gives a steel surface a wood look. In this Fadior Real Home in Foshan, the dark wood-look sideboard and tall column are cabinetry finishes, not worktops.

How much care does a wood countertop need?

HomeGuide says most clean, unfinished wood countertops need oiling once per month, while finished wood countertops may need resealing once per year or sooner if damaged. It puts upkeep at $10 to $50+ per year, depending on how much the top is used. This Old House says a wood counter needs a food-safe protective coating on all sides and edges. It quotes a lumber company owner who says undermount sinks are ideal with wood countertops, because a cutout that extends slightly over the bowl keeps standing water from saturating the edge. It also advises solid wood rather than particleboard or MDF with a wood veneer, which can swell when exposed to moisture. The same Houzz poster adds that water rots

wood, that kitchens need nontoxic sealants, and that accidental knife marks add up after 10 years.

What do quartz countertops offer?

George Buildings, a building-materials supplier, describes quartz as a manufactured material made of natural quartz ground into powder and combined with pigments, resins and polymers. Among the advantages it lists are durability, resistance to staining, a non-porous surface that does not need sealing, and a wide range of colours and designs. Its drawbacks are visible seams in light-coloured quartz and possible discolouring in direct sunlight. A commenter in a Houzz thread says quartz is very easy to maintain and keep looking new, and reports that a grandmother’s quartz, used every day for 10 years, still looks new. Fabrication matters too: NIOSH and OSHA jointly updated a hazard alert in February 2026 on respirable crystalline silica dust for workers who

manufacture, finish and install natural and engineered stone countertops, so ask a fabricator how they control dust. For a buyer-side look at silica questions, see Silestone Silica Content: What Buyers Should Verify.

Which looks better beside existing wood cabinets?

A poster in a Facebook home-design group asked whether to choose a quartz or wood counter for a kitchen in a home built in 1940, worrying that quartz would make the original solid wood cabinets look their age. One replier suggested quartz or leathered granite, even one that looks like soapstone, while saying wood would be beautiful and go well with the original cabinets. Hold a sample of each against your door finish in the light of your own kitchen before you choose.

What does a steel worktop add to the wood-versus-quartz choice?

George Buildings lists stainless steel as hygienic and resistant to heat and stains, but prone to scratches and dents and noisy. Fadior’s page on made-to-order steel worktops describes 304 stainless steel countertops supplied to order, including standalone orders. It says a worktop order starts with an accurate plan: wall lengths, corners, supports, sink position and appliance cut-outs. Where George Buildings flags noise as a drawback of steel, Fadior’s materials list a damping strip under countertops for noise reduction and durability. Its materials list also names sintered stone for countertops.

How much do wood and quartz countertops cost?

HomeGuide puts wood at $50 to $150 per square foot installed, or $1,500 to $6,000 for 30 to 40 square feet of countertop in a typical 100- to 200-square-foot kitchen. For comparison it gives $80 to $150 per square foot installed for granite and $50 to $200 for quartz. This Old House gives a similar wood range of $50–$150 per square foot, with most homeowners paying $1,200–$5,000 total. George Buildings prints typical costs per square meter of $1,235 – $2,150 for quartz, $129 – $2,150 for wood and $860 – $1,075 for stainless steel. HomeGuide quotes installed prices per square foot, while George Buildings quotes per square meter and does not say whether installation is included in the quartz and

wood figures, so compare written quotes for your own layout rather than the ranges. HomeGuide itemises prices for each wood species, labour, sealing, cut-outs and plumbing. George Buildings prices 20 materials per square meter; those line items fall outside a wood-versus-quartz choice, so only the headline ranges appear here.

How does a steel worktop sit in a real kitchen?

Fadior’s kitchens, wardrobes, baths and storage systems use 304 stainless steel cabinet bodies. In a Foshan Real Home with a steel worktop, a steel worktop turns beneath a corner window beside a black sink, with pale greige cabinet fronts around it. Fadior’s entry for that home says its storage uses 304 stainless steel cabinet bodies, while the steel surface and the visible door finishes each have their own specification. For how countertops and cabinet bodies are paired, read how countertops pair with cabinet bodies.

What should you check before you order wood or quartz?

George Buildings suggests starting with how you will use the counter, your budget and how much maintenance you can handle. For wood, This Old House advises measuring the tops of your base cabinets and allowing for the overhang you want, with 1 to 1 1/2 inches typical along a wall and 12 to 16 inches on an island for stools. Ask whether the top is solid wood, which grain it uses and how every side, edge and sink cutout is finished. For quartz, ask where the seams will fall and how the fabricator controls dust when cutting and finishing the slab. HomeGuide recommends at least three itemized estimates and a detailed contract and warranty in writing before the project starts.

It also says experts suggest letting wood sit unwrapped in the room where it will be installed for 2 to 5 days. Our guide to reading each layer of a kitchen separates the countertop from the cabinet below it.

Where can you send a Fadior worktop question?

Fadior’s countertops page asks for a measured worktop plan, sink and appliance details, project location and preferred edge style. The Fadior contact page form takes your name, email and phone, with country, project, budget, company and message as optional details. It also suggests sharing the room type, country, approximate timeline, and drawings or site photos if available. The Fadior kitchen page says a quote starts with a cabinet schedule, with cabinet dimensions and quantities, door finishes, worktop, drawers, appliance integration and delivery scope shaping the final configuration. You can also browse photographed kitchens on the Fadior Real Homes list. For steel worktop planning in more depth, see planning a steel worktop for the kitchen.

Questions this guide answers

[HomeGuide](https://homeguide.com/costs/wood-countertops-cost) says most wood countertops cost less than granite or quartz, but granite and quartz have better stain and heat resistance. [Baird Brothers](https://blog.bairdbrothers.com/wooden-countertops-how-do-plank-countertops-and-butcher-block-stack-up/) says quartz and granite are more resistant to warping and water damage than wood butcher block or plank tops. Wood, though, can be sanded and refinished after dings, stains or gouges, says This Old House. Which is more durable depends on how you cook and how much care you will give it.

Usually, according to [HomeGuide](https://homeguide.com/costs/wood-countertops-cost): it puts wood at $50 to $150 per square foot installed, against $50 to $200 for quartz and $80 to $150 for granite. [George Buildings](https://georgebuildings.com/20-best-kitchen-countertops/) prints $1,235 – $2,150 per square meter for quartz and $129 – $2,150 for wood, on a different basis, so compare quotes on the same layout.

[This Old House](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/kitchens/all-about-wood-countertops) says wood countertops are rarely used for chopping and may scorch under hot pots or pans, and a commenter in a Houzz thread keeps trivets by the stove. [George Buildings](https://georgebuildings.com/20-best-kitchen-countertops/) says even granite, quartzite, porcelain and stainless steel, which it lists as handling high heat very well, still call for trivets to avoid thermal shock.

[HomeGuide](https://homeguide.com/costs/wood-countertops-cost) says wood countertops last 20+ years with proper installation, cleaning and maintenance, and that a well-maintained top not used for direct cutting can last 60+ years. [This Old House](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/kitchens/all-about-wood-countertops) says factory-finished options generally come with a warranty that can range from one year to a lifetime.
