Which closet company fits your project?
American Closet Systems and Closet America sound alike but take opposite routes to a finished closet. American Closet Systems lists the units you can order online, and you handle measuring, delivery and fitting. Closet America designs the closet in your home, builds it at its Maryland factory and fits it with its own team. Fadior has no connection with either company; the facts here come from their own pages.
Which layout suits a long, narrow closet?
Treat a long, narrow closet as a corridor: fronts on both walls, a clear aisle and one light at the far end. Closet America's own planning notes agree on the order of use, putting everyday items at eye level near the door and pushing seasonal items, luggage and rarely used accessories to upper shelves and corners. The photographs below show corridor runs in Fadior homes, including a dressing corridor of smoked-glass doors in Foshan and a pale sage wardrobe corridor.
How do you plan a full wall of wardrobe fronts?
A full-height wall keeps a bedroom calm, but the interior plan has to come before the doors. Closet America lists double and single hanging sections, adjustable shelving and soft-close drawer banks among its options. American Closet Systems works differently: its FAQ says its units are limited to those in the Available Units tab and that it does not customize units. The runs below include a white wardrobe wall with narrow gold-toned edges and a curved run in a London villa dressing room. For the wider choice between kits and built-ins, see modular and built-in closet systems side by side.
What should the inside of the closet include?
Closet America lists hanging sections, adjustable shelving, shoe shelves, soft-close drawer banks, jewelry drawers, valet rods, hideaway ironing boards, center islands, lighting and full-length mirrors among its options. Start from what you own: count the long garments, the folded stacks and the shoes before you choose bays. IKEA's reach-in closets make the same point on a smaller scale, with adjustable shelves, drawers, hanging rails and shoe racks, according to its reach-in wardrobe page.
Does a closet island earn its floor space?
Closet America lists center islands with countertop and drawer storage among its options, yet its advice for a small walk-in is to skip the island and keep the middle open, because an island needs clearance on all sides to work. Measure the aisle before you draw one in. If you want to see how an island pays its way, read a closet island that earns its floor space.
What does American Closet Systems sell, and what does it leave to you?
American Closet Systems works from a catalog of listed units. Its FAQ says its units are limited to those in the Available Units tab, its colors are limited to those on the site and it does not customize units.
Hardware is fixed at purchase: handle holes are drilled 96 mm (3 3/4 inches) apart on drawer fronts only, and you may change the hardware yourself afterward. Side panels come at standard heights of 84 or 90 1/4 inches, and the company cannot cut them.
It will help lay out a closet from your dimensions, but says it does not accept responsibility for the final product because the design rests on your measurements.
It does not offer measuring, delivery or installation; it can recommend independent contractors that are not its employees, and it assumes no liability for their work.
Orders generally ship on pallets by common carrier, so the address needs tractor-trailer access and, ideally, a forklift; pick-up is possible in a van or large car.
The minimum order is $250 for solid colors and four named woodgrains, and $350 for other woodgrains, before tax and shipping. A section that falls below its minimum, such as $175 of Sunset parts, is billed at $250 unless you add parts.
Wall-mounted units are not recommended for pantries, bookcases or garage shelving because of the weight on the shelves, and must not go on plaster walls or walls with metal studs.
What does Closet America include?
Closet America describes a five-step process. A designer visits with samples, measures the closet and shows a 3D view of the proposed layout at the appointment; you approve the layout and a written quote that it says it honors for 12 months; the system is cut and assembled at its Landover, Maryland facility; its own team installs it, which it says takes one to two days for most walk-in closets; and it follows up afterward.
Its walk-in closet page lists built-to-order construction from 3/4-inch thermo-fused laminate panels with soft-close wood drawers, leg levelers, tool-free shelf supports and 3 mm edge banding.
The company describes a transferable double lifetime warranty and a lifetime service guarantee; read the full terms on its own warranty page before you rely on them.
Closet America lists addresses in Landover, Charlotte, Raleigh and Philadelphia, and its Richmond page says each piece is crafted in its Maryland factory, with installation usually taking one day.
How do these companies compare with a made-to-measure stainless steel wardrobe?
The table lines up what each company says on its own pages. The Fadior column draws only on what Fadior states about its cabinetry, so ask every company for scope, finish and fitting in writing.

Why would you choose a stainless steel wardrobe?
Fadior makes its cabinetry at factories in Foshan, China, and its wardrobes use 304 stainless steel cabinet bodies.
The glue-free cabinet body is formaldehyde-free; doors, finishes and countertops follow their own specifications.
Finish is a separate choice. Fadior lists powder coat in 80 or more colors and 3D wood-grain transfer among its surface treatments, and names Blum of Austria as a hinge and drawer-system partner alongside its own drawer ranges.
Fadior describes the cabinet-body structural warranty as 30 years, with terms per contract.
See the result in a Foshan apartment dressing corridor: Fadior describes the 304 stainless steel cabinet bodies there as separate from the bronze-toned frames, glass doors and interior finishes, which are specified separately.
What should you measure and ask before ordering any closet?
Bring the same list to every company so each quote covers the same job. For budgets and fitting day, read the full budget plan for a fitted closet project and the planning guide for walk-in closet fitting.
Closet order checklist
- Measure every wall, the ceiling height and any slope, and note doors, windows, vents and switches.
- Ask which company measures, delivers and fits, and get the answer in writing.
- Check panel heights against your ceiling; American Closet Systems says it cannot cut side panels.
- List what you own, then size the bays to match.
- Confirm what each quote includes: panels, doors, drawers, lighting, delivery and fitting.
- Read the warranty terms in full before you rely on them.
- Keep a clear walkway and add an island only if you can walk around it.
What else turns up beside these two companies?
Modular Closets appears alongside them in the results. It offers a free design service and a 3D design tool, ships DIY closet systems in white, natural oak or grey, and says it manufactures in the USA, with orders usually leaving its factory within 5 to 7 business days.
IKEA's reach-in range is the store route: its category page describes reach-in wardrobes about 80 to 95 inches tall, 60 to 80 inches wide and 25 inches deep.
For rough budgeting, a supplier guide on Lyson's site dated January 12, 2025 cites US closets from $1,000 to $12,000 or more without stating a closet size, so treat it as a marker only. Its market-size figure is left out because the guide cites no source for it.
